Backcountry skiing behind my house. This aspen forest is a playground. Some aspen are old and broken, some burnt, some scarred with lover's names, some just budding with spring.

To me this shows the difference between the path and the way. Sounds obscure but makes sense to me.

I took this on Saturday morning in my room as we drank coffee and told stories. The blown up photo above her I took on a trip to Durango and reminds me of flying dreams.

I haven't uploaded any photos yet - just this one now - to remind me of the windy sea air and the breathtaking beauty that is much bigger than any of us. It's been a wonderful few weeks but a bit strange - like the universe has something important to tell me while it hits me over the head with people's ridiculous decisions and pettiness at every turn. Yike. It takes all kinds, but I've got no interest in so many of those kinds! One in particular keeps turning up, and she's swimming in bad karma.

Love my gals

That's Cybil, Tara, and Jaime. They came over from Breck for some deliciousness at the restaurant dish where I started a second gig - for the fun, the wine, and the food tasting at every shift.

I bought all my gear from her at the backcountry store she manages - Mountain Outfitters in Breckenridge. If you ever get to Breck, stop in and say hi. Tell her Nancy sent you and then give her a wink. That'll really freak her out.

Currency of the Future

At Jaime and Sam's wedding

In response to Tracey's question:

"Creativity is the currency of the future." - John Frohmeyer (Former Chair, National Endowment of the Arts)

I started this blog after reading blogs for some years before that - mainly watching friend Heather Hamilton (now Armstrong of Dooce) go public with the most intimate details of her life in 2001. The question of what is private and public was all I could think of. In the late 90’s I realized the potential of this new communication medium and was beside myself with excitement.

Around that time I read in Business 2.0 that “Creativity is the currency of the future.” What? Creativity is the currency of the future?? Really. What a concept. I was thrilled to no end and it was all I could think about for a few years. It is still a prominent thought.

It’s not tough to imagine what this quote really means now, but back then it was a totally new idea, and no one, at least on my horizon, was making money over the internet from pure creative content. If anything, early adopters were using websites to sell goods they were already selling in brick and mortar stores (ha, remember that phrase? how funny. Makes me realize how far we’ve come). And if any early adopters were making money from their content it was the most forward, creative thinkers, those who could envision the next big thing. (God, this is taking me back, I’m remembering how crazy excited I was about the internet and the possibilities). Anyway, Blogger realized all of this too and came up with a turnkey solution to get people online without a person needing to know any code. That’s when I started a blog.

But it’s traffic - eyeballs that go back to a page time and time again - that really interest me. Creativity in any form whether it’s writing, creative thinking, a product, or simply creative use of the medium, attracts traffic. Traffic is desired by advertisers. This means that advertisers must come to the individual for the eyeballs they generate – not a company but a creative individual. That's power. There's no reason for the individual to change content for the advertiser, the creative holds all the cards.

This is one of those magical times in history when creatives are in power without needing a middle person. THIS IS NOT A BAD THING. It is also inevitable. The internet is a living entity and is going to continue to become different things and if creative individuals like Tracey or Heather can make money because of this medium, then fantastic. When Dooce added ads to her site I couldn’t believe the complainers – they were out of line, out of touch, and frankly ridiculous. “It’s ugly. You’ve sold out. You’re not legit anymore,” stuff like that. To anyone talking like this I say, where’s your VISION people?!

Calling the beginning of blogging the Golden Age, which assumes anything afterwards is somewhat tarnished, is small-minded. It has really just begun.

Lake meeting

We had all just arrived at Gold Lake, and after a great spread of italian bread, cheeses, veggies, grapes and wine (oh yes, the rumor is we went through 15 bottles in two days - ladies like the wine), we went for a kayak around the lake. Jaime is the one standing after having jumped in the lake. I'm on my way to jump off some rocks. It was so refreshing and rejuvenating to be in this place with these gals. A feeling that is tough to explain.

This week was something else. My friends Jaime and Sam were married over the weekend in a pasture with rolling hills and horses in the background. The reception was in a barn. The bride danced on a table, the groom climbed one of the barn ladders, jumped into our outstretched arms and crowd surfed. A friend surprised us all with a fireworks display. Imagine being called out into the cold for something "good" and forty of us huddled together for warmth, taking swigs from sparkling wine bottles. I only have a few photos from that. There were plenty of people taking pictures and I just wanted to be in the moment and not carry a camera.

However, at Jaime's bachelorette getaway on Wednesday and Thursday I took most of the photos. It was here, at a seculded mountain lake 25 miles outside of Boulder that is a complete jewel. Nine girls spent two days here and slept in a cabin on yummy feather beds. The week was inspiring - beautiful in so, so, so many ways. Nothing I'm writing is doing any of it justice, but I'm too tired to write now. Just wanted to leave you with this image. If you click on it, it'll take you to a few more on Flickr. I'll post more photos and thoughts of this week when my brain and heart aren't reeling from delight.

Ode to a force of nature

It's Miss Tracey's birthday today. We met in 10th grade and have been the closest of friends since. She is the most amazing friend that you could ask for - always giving of her time and thoughts, being there when it's really needed, continuing to inspire me day in and day out with what she does, how she does it, and her interminable drive to make a difference and constantly connect with others. I feel washed over by the good energy of this world that we've been close for all of these years. Can you tell I adore her?

Go on and check out her stuff. She is a professional photographer and an author of two baby journals that are perfect for a mother to be and for keeping all the important memories of a baby's first year of life. I've been talking to her about blogging for a while and she finally took me up on it. In a short three months later she's got her personal blog: Mother May I , is a writer for Minti where she's a natural star, her groupies hang out for her photo tips and contests at Picture This, and she gets creative on her own photo blog.

See what I mean when I say amazing? Let me just add prolific as well, ok?! But aside from all of this, and so important to me, is that she is a fantastic friend. Wise, loving, silly, open, ever-changing, strong, supportive, vulnerable, and aware.

Trace, happiest of birthdays to you, you force of nature. May this year be full of wonder, love, health, satisfying challenges, and a bit of personal quiet time every now and then. I only wish we lived closer so we could go out for lattes and share more of our everyday worlds.

To testify to love

You know I'm a fan of "Deadwood." The great thing about this series for me is learning about David Milch's creative process and what drives him. Often actors show up on set and don't have their lines. Often the next pages come from what the performances inspired the day before. It seems to be a constant mystery to everyone, including Milch, how the storylines will go. The one thing that doesn't change is the spine of the message: Although there is violence and greed in this lawless town, people are driven to build community and it is a place where, along with all the difficulties, love is created as well.

Or something like that. I'm sure someone can say it better, and has.

Here's what David Milch has to say about what drives him to create this:
"I'm a big admirer of our country. And I admire it so much that I love to chronicle it's shortcomings, it's disasters, it's unfairnesses and it's aberrations. Because I think that's the way you testify to love. I want to glorify America and my idea of how to glorify it is to show it whole, as best I can. I believe that it withstands that scrutiny. So I look at it hard, and that's a joy."

Isn't that beautiful? It's similar to how John Cassavetes glorifies love. I get these people, they speak to me. To see something or someone whole and love nonetheless; love can withstand the scrutiny. Love's fundamental aspect. Gorgeous and heartbreaking, the breath of life.

Love the fool

I saved this quote from somewhere - most likely my brilliant friend Tracey shared it with me. It is right on the money of how I feel today. We could all use some of this wisdom, don'tcha think?

"I must learn to love the fool in me - the one who feels too much, talks too much, takes too many chances, wins sometimes and loses often, lacks self-control, loves and hates, hurts and gets hurt, promises and breaks promises, laughs and cries."
- Theodore Isaac Rubin

Have a lovely day.
